Mosquito Nets for Africa….and beyond

In 1994 a small home industry business was started on a farm a few kilometers outside Stanford in the Overberg district of the Western Cape, South Africa. From simple beginnings, the business has grown to become one of the largest and most renowned good quality mosquito net manufacturers and exporter in South Africa.

With modest beginnings in the passage of the farmhouse and a small Wendy House, from cutting fabric on the floor, employing a part-time seamstress with one sewing machine, the workshop has now grown to a staff of nine. The team includes cutters, seamstresses, timber frame makers and administrators. Most of them have learnt and honed their skills at Kiwinet.

As business expanded, the need arose to move and in 2005 Kiwinet moved to a small house in the village until mid 2009. Kiwinet then moved to lovely business premises at 36 Daneel Street, STANFORD.

Kiwinet was born when a local Stanford lady of New Zealand origin- needed mosquito nets for her children and when she could not find good quality mosquito nets, she decided to make her own. Her friends so liked what they saw that she was soon making nets for them too and thus began Kiwinet as a business. In 1998 the “Kiwi” and her family moved and she sold the business to Robyn Nel, the current owner, also a Stanford resident at the time. She has since worked side by side with her staff, ensuring professional and personal service to each and every client.

The Kiwinet brand has become a household name within the South African interior decorating industry, with luxurious, quality nets being supplied to all parts of the country, to private homes and to the hospitality industry, as well as throughout Africa, the Indian Ocean Islands, Europe and the UK. They have even sent nets to Sir Richard Branson’s island home in the Caribbean!

The unique, original designs, combined with the skills developed over time by all the staff, enables Kiwinet to customize nets for any room design and size. A truly proud “Made in South Africa” success story.
